John Joseph Vesely membentuk Secondhand Serenade di rumahnya di kota Menlo Park, California, Amerika Serikat, pada tahun 2004. Vesely dibesarkan di San Francisco Bay Area di lingkungan keluarga musik dan dilahirkan sebagai anak seorang musisi jazz profesional , berkomentar bahwa "masuk ke musik adalah sesuatu yang alami" baginya. Dia menghabiskan 8 tahun bermain bass dalam band-band lokal, memainkan berbagai jenis musik mulai dari ska dan hardcore sampai ke rock dan pop.
Vesely mulai menulis lagu sendiri ketika ia bertemu dengan istrinya Candice Vesely. Dia ingin dia memainkan lagu dan mendampinginya dengan gitar bass." Dia telah mengakui dia menemukan "panggilan sejati" ketika dia mengambil gitar. Nama Secondhand Serenade adalah referensi ke jalan di mana lagu-lagunya adalah 'serenades' yang dinyanyikan oleh istrinya Candice, yang melahirkan dua anak anak laki-laki dari pernikahan mereka.
